New Awesome Looking Undead Movie

This looks hilarious. Totally gonna go see this in theaters.

Quick and Dirty NPC’s

This is an excerpt from my Firefly Hurtlin Through the Verse V2 RPG on how to generate NPC’s quickly. Although the examples are geared towards the Firefly setting, it is easy to use in an style of game. I’ve found this kind of thinking has helped me with my NPC’s over the years.

Random NPCs

Not all NPC’s in Firefly: Hurtlin’ Through the ‘Verse need to be stated out and have gear. If the NPC is involved in a shootout or victim of a player shakedown/mugging, give them some mundane gear or a few nice trinkets.

NPC personality and personifications do not need to be overly complicated or detailed. Often times NPC’s will fade to the background with time but the gems that stand out will be remembered and the players will actively seek them out again and again.

Make notes of the NPC’s that the players seem to react to and make sure you pop them back in again here and there for better or for worse. Also as a GM give the players initiative on which NPC’s they would like to see again. Ask them after each session what particular NPC’s they enjoyed and would like to see and then make a note of it.

Remember if a player is engaged and wants to see one of your NPC’s again, you’ve done something awesome and should be excited that they are looking to interact with that character again.

Here is a Quick and Dirty formula for NPC’s that is pretty easy. Give the NPC two or three descriptive words, what they do, sex if you so desire, and a motivation/goal. Even if the goal does not go along with the current adventure/circumstance it can come into play at a later date.

Here are a few examples:

A Really Big Fight

No one could really argue that Max’s plan wasn’t working. In fact they might have argued it was working too well. They might have pointed it out when he tried to assault a man, apparently a martial arts champion, who dodged Max’s attack, picked him up and slammed him to the floor.

They might have pointed it out when a woman climbed on Max’s back and began pulling his hair and screaming at him for ruining her fine silk dress.

“I’ve got to help him!” John said. He watched the drunken guard beside him clumsily pull out his stun baton and start to move forward. Possessed with a crazy thought John reached out and knocked the baton back at the guards head, rendering the man unconscious. “Oh my! You’ve had too much to drink you poor soul!” John cried out to no one in particular. John gave a quick prayer of apology, grabbed the guard’s stun baton and the identification and security keys, and headed to into the fray to aid Max.

“Should I start a fire?” Justin asked excitedly.

“No don’t start a gorram fire! I think we have all the distraction we need!” John said into the comlink.

Justin looked down at all of the alcohol and grease he had prepared for an accidental fire sadly, “Fine..”

In the Vault

Raina and Oscar were enjoying a tour of the vault and all of the exquisite pieces of art that Yelum Turrin had managed to procure over the years.

In the center of the room, in a casing of thick glass, was their target: Modigiliani’s Little Peasant. They both decided, wisely, to look at the piece, but not pay much attention to it.

Yelum’s comlink came to life, “Sir! This is Guard Chief Maxwell. We have a situation.”

“There.. Seems to be a riot among the guests. They are throttling one of the servers!”

Yelum sighed, “Get the men ready with stun batons and stun guns. I’ll be up momentarily.” He then turned to Oscar and Raina, “Unfortunately we must return to the party, such as it is, and deal with some unpleasantness. If you’ll follow me?”

The group headed back through the vault door and took a look at the security screen which showed a full scale brawl happening in the main hall. Pay little attention to his guests, Yelum and all, save one, of his security compliment rushed out of the door to try to stop the fight.

Raina began flirting with the remaining guard as Oscar snuck up behind him and fired his stun gun at his head. The guards head slammed down hard on the control panel. His head seemed to bounce back up, his face contorted in pain and blood leaking from a fresh wound. “Oh! Wha–?!” Oscar let off another shot that took the guard out causing him to topple out of his chair.

“That was a tough bastard.” Oscar said causally, holstering his stun gun. “You think you can get this vault open?” He looked down at Raina, who already had her hacking terminal plugged into the computer, her fingers clicking the pad furiously. “Wait, where did you have that hidden?!”

“None of your business.” She said with a smile. “I’ve already deleted all the video surveillance for the evening. We won’t have to worry about that. However this is gonna be a bit more tricky.” She nodded to the vault. “Give me a few minutes.”

Oscar looked down at the screen, “I’m not sure your Max has a few minutes.”

A Sudden Inspiration

John attempted and failed to pull Max bodily from the fray. A man was on Max’s back punching him all over while other patrons started pummeling one another. John threw caution to the wind and rolled the stun baton to Max, who grabbed it and stabbed it over his shoulder at his assailant. Max’s strike landed a bit too true and hit the man right in the eye. The electrical surge from the baton caused the man’s eye to burst, sending him reeling off of Max.

John ran and burst into the kitchen, looking ruffled and battered, “They’re.. They’re attacking one of our own.” He said breathlessly, “A fight started.. Something about us not deserving protection. A union.”

Aside: Elmer decided that he wanted to enrage the other workers and decided to introduce the whole union scenario into the adventure (that is why I added it to Part 2 of the session recap for flavor and to develop it slightly). He rolled a Communication (Persuasion) test and got a really high roll and doubles.

I asked him what he wanted to do and what he wanted the reaction of the crowd to be (my philosophy here is that Elmer came up with a unique and really cool idea and I wanted to reward him. Rather than I coming up with something that may or may not have been as cool as what he had in his head, I decided to let him tell me how he wanted them to react and I took it from there).

Elmer wanted them angry and ready to fight. So suddenly I channeled the old union buster issues of the late 19th and early 20th century and for some reason they all became Irish fighting boys!^_^

The workers fired up at once. A large brick of a man threw down his cleaning rag, “That’s it boys! They’ve pushed us around for the last time! They want a fight! They got one! Let’s take it to em! We’ll take it to the docks! We’ll take it to the streets of Beylix! We’ll see them load a boat without us lads! Now let’s get out there and save one of our own! Let’s take the fight to them here! Now!”

Without another word the workers charged into the fray and began to pummel the nobles of Beylix and Unified Reclamation for their oppressions of the working man.

Thanks to the new and much more dangerous distraction Max was able to get out of the fight and hobble over to John and Justin. “What now?!” It was hard to understand him since his nose was broken and face was starting to swell something fierce.

“We need to get to the study to grab the painting!” Justin roared over the din.

Raina and Oscar exited the security room casually, “We got it. Let’s get out of here!”

The group scurried back to the Fast Lady where Nadicus had the ship prepped and ready to go. Justin threw himself into the pilot’s seat and set a course for Skyplex 3 and hit the gas.

This is Why I Hate Rich People

The group handed over the painting to a smiling Baron McGiles, who thanked them for their efforts in procuring it for him. They were then taken to plush rooms to get a good night sleep.

The next morning the group was escorted to the dining hall for breakfast where they say the painting erected on the table, sitting next to it was a smiling Baron and a not smiling Yelum Turrin.

It was evident that he had been up all night dealing with the riot that Max had caused. His lip was fat and he had a shiner on his right eye.

The group froze in their tracks, “What’s going on here?!” Raina demanded.

Baron McGiles smiled, lit a cigar, and explained that he and Yelum have an arrangement, for excitement and a lark, that whenever one of them procures a new piece of art the other tires to steal it. If successful then they win 5,000 credits. If they fail they owe 5,000. It’s just for sport.

Yelum stood up and picked up his painting, “I’m not allowed to seek retribution on you. However the damage you have caused to my reputation and to my guests is inexcusable. One of them lost his eye! I will find some way to repay you for your kindness.” He thank nodded curtly to the Baron and marched from the room.

The group looked uncomfortably at the Baron who took a long drag of his cigar and smiled, “I wonder how long till he’ll get that reappraised and realize it’s a fake. That’s another 5,000 credits to me.” He got up and walked over to Raina. “I had an enchanting evening. I look forward to our next encounter. I shall Wave you.”

He then walked out of the room before a stunned and angry Raina could retort.

Max looked extremely angry, “That’s why I hate them rich folk!”

The End.

Firefly Hurtlin Through the Verse V2

Part one- here.

Angie– Raina Patel
John– Justin Dodge
Elmer– John Salem
Chad– Derek Cyan (Not Present)
Drew– Max Power
Omar– Oscar Jennings
Liam– Nadicus Manners

Aside 1 – This adventure was inspired by the Mass Effect 2 DLC Katsumi: Lost Memories. I thought it would be quite a bit of fun set in the Firefly universe. I wasn’t wrong (although I’ll give all credit of the enjoyment to my players)

Aside 2- I gave the players the better part of an hour and a half to come up with a plan on how they wanted to do this. I gave them a rough floor plan (Mansion Estate Map more of a flow chart) of the manor, so they could decide where everyone wanted to operate.

For the purpose of speeding through this session recap without having to type all this up, I will summarize the final plan here.

Nadicus, Max, and John would walk around the gala as servants offering appetizers to the guests. Justin, having some cooking experience, would be in the kitchen ready to create a grease fire as a distraction if need be.

Max planned on starting a fight with one of the guests.

Raina and Oscar would schmooze Mr. Turrin into a tour of the vault to case it so Raina knew what she was up against when she hacked the system.

All in all it was a good plan after many debates, offered opinions, and considerations.. What could go wrong right?

A Night at the Ball

Everyone made it past security and into position at the gala without any incident. Everyone played their part of servant or guest well for over an hour. The first snag happened when a drunk and haggard looking noble approached Nadicus and mistook him for a servant who had been in her employee and in her bed many years past.

Not wanting to cause a scene Nadicus agreed to be carted off to the bathroom where he was subjected to all sorts of horrendous sights, sounds, and textures.

Eventually the fornicating couple was caught and escorted from the ballroom.

Oscar and Raina

The two quickly found their way to Yelum Turrin and began to inquire about his art collections and his knowledge about art and history from the Earth-That-Was. Oscar flubbed and partially made an ass of himself, but Raina was quick to act and glossed things over with a quick bat of the eyes and a winning smile.

She guided Yelum over to another piece of art and inquired about it. “This piece is magnificent! Where is it from?”

Yelum sighed tragically, “Sadly it is believed that this piece is destroyed. This is only a replica that I had made, at great cost, from images of it that still survive.” Yelum smiled at Raina, “if you like art, I would be honored to take you on a tour of my vault, under guard you understand. I can’t be too careful. You’re, um.. friend can come too, of course.”

With a polite bow from Yelum the duo were headed, accompanied by an armed guard, to the art vault.

Justin, John, and Max

John, being a man of god, was not comfortable with the plan at all. He decided the best way to stay out of trouble was to remain hidden in the bar, located in a room off the main hall. There he spied a guard coveting drinks from a flask he had hidden in his armor.

“Good day sir. Can you believe these rich idiots?” John grumbled.

“I know. They make more in a ruttin day than we do in our lifetime! And I have to protect them!” The guard murmured, the smell of gin wafting off his breath.

John’s eyes watered from the guard’s breath, “Well the job could be worse, you know. We could be stuck down in Beylix in the heaps hoping to God not to get methane poisoning.”

“Well if those gorram elites have their way and bust up the union, then we will be rutting well down there, won’t we?!”

“The unions having trouble?!” John asked, injecting as much shock into his voice as possible.

“You didn’t hear? Where you been? These rutting crooked UR thieves want to do away with our union. They’d rob us hand over gorram fist if they could get away with it!”

“Interesting…” John mused.

In the kitchen Justin grumpily finished off a difficult recipe of Canard a l’orange. “I’ve never even EATEN a ruttin duck! Yet these gluttons are snacking on it as if it’s nothing!” John flipped on his short range comlink, “Please tell me I can start a fire! What the ruttin hell is going on now?! I’m stuck in this kitchen!”

Max was the one who choose to answer, “You don’t need to start a fire just yet. Raina and Oscar just went down to the vault. I have a better idea.”

“You’ll see.” Max walked near the kitchen and accidentally bumped into a patron, spilling the tray all over him.

“You clumsy fool!” Cried the patron, looking horrified at his tuxedo.

“Who you callin’ a fool? You bumped into me!”

“Please tell me you’re not starting a fight!!” Justin whispered fiercely into his comlink.

“Oh my, a fight! You’d better go break it up my good man,” John’s calm voice wafted over the frequency.

“I bumped into no one you uneducated bumpkin! Do you even know who I am?!” The patron continued to rage.

“I don’t give a good gorram damn who you are! You think you could take me? You think you got what it takes?” Max roared starting forward.

The patron went calm, “I have something you will never have.”

“Yeah, what’s that?!”

“Honor!” Without another word the patron smacked Max straight in the face. Max rounded about, picking up the food tray and lobbing it at the patron, missing, and sending it careening into the back of a woman’s head, knocking her over and sending food all over other guests.

“Oh dear me. A big fight.” John’s voice came nervously over the frequency.

Firefly: Hurtlin’ Through the ‘Verse, Session 3

The Little Peasant by Modigiliani

These sessions are using my Firefly: Hurtlin’ Through the ‘Verse Rules based on AGE: Here’s the document if you are interested:

Firefly Hurtlin Through the Verse V2

Angie– Raina Patel
John– Justin Dodge
Elmer– John Salem
Chad– Derek Cyan (Not Present)
Drew– Max Power
Omar– Oscar Jennings
Liam– Nadicus Manners

New Characters– Omar created a new character using the one of the new backgrounds I created, Has-Been Cortex Celebrity. Noble Class.

Liam created a new character with the Corporate Man background and noble class.

Setting the Stage

The crew of the Fast Lady had gotten themselves into trouble big time. That trouble had her arms crossed, an eyebrow arched, and a cold grim glare in her eyes. Raina Patel sat on the other side of a police interrogation table staring at her crew, who were all covered in bumps, bruises, and blood. “I can’t leave you alone for a second, can I?” She said coldly.

We Gotta do Ruttin’ What?

After dumping off the salvage from their last job the crew bid goodbye to Raina for a few days since she was off to visit a client and friend of hers Baron McGiles, one the more prominent employees of Unified Reclamation.

Justin, John, Derek, and Max decided this would be a good time to blow off some steam and relax. This plan quickly went south however when a former Alliance Soldier from Justin’s past accused him of being an Independent lover, which started a bar brawl between loyalists patrons and some browncoats.

The group got to experience the brutal diligence of Unified Reclamations security force when they stormed the bar and began pacifying the patrons with stun guns and batons. The next thing they knew, they were arrested and crammed into a little cell until a guard escorted them into an interrogation room, where their worst fear was confirmed; their captain had been notified.

“You do realize that you’ve caused me embarrassment with my client?” Raina spat. “He was the one who was nice enough to bail you all out! I don’t have the kind of credits to get you released!”

Raina’s rant was interrupted by a brief knock on the door before it opened. A man in a crisp suit walked in a sat down next to Raina.

“Good morning. I am Mr. Grimes, representative of Baron McGiles. As I’m sure Lady Raina has informed you, my employer has posted your bail and assured me that no charges will be filed against you for disorderly conduct.

“This took some effort on the Baron’s part, and as such he would like to hire you all to perform a task of a delicate nature. One of his rivals, a Mr. Yelum Turrin, at Unified Reclamation has recently procured a piece of art from Earth-That-Was.” Mr. Grimes held up a datapad and passed it among the crew, “It’s called the Little Peasant by Modigiliani. The Baron would like you to procure this for him.”

The crew all exchange apprehensive looks. John Salem cleared his throat uncomfortably, “You.. want me to steal something? You know that the Good Book states that stealin–“

“What does your book tell you about being incarcerated for disturbing the peace and not having any money to get yourself out?” Mr. Grimes asked coolly.

John mumbled for a moment, “That it isn’t an enticing proposition.”

“Exactly. Mr. Turrin is having a gala tomorrow on Skyplex 1, which he resides on, for many of the nobles and aristocracy of the surrounding area. We have managed to acquire jobs for a few of you as servants. Lady Raina and a man in our employ, Mr. Oscar Jennings, will be guests. We also have a young employee of Unified Reclamation who will be going in with you as a servant to help keep you on track. You will be given a hacking terminal to aid you in this endeavor. You will also be given special stun guns that you can smuggle in for defensive purposes.

“We would like it that none of the guests are injured in this operation. It is VITAL that the painting is not damaged in anyway. I have already sent the schematics of Mr. Turrin’s manor to the Fast Lady. I will leave you to plan out this. The gala starts at 5pm tomorrow evening. When you have the painting, simply fly to Baron McGiles estate on Skyplex 3. Good luck.”

Mr. Grimes rose and left the room.

The crew nervously looked at Rania, her stony expression still firmly on her face, “Well at least we have some work boss.” Muttered Justin.
Raina glowered.

The group returned to the ship where they met Oscar Jennings and Nadicus Manners and all began planning a heist that none of them felt they could really pull off.

To be Continued

Mouseguarding Dragon Age

Friday I posted that I was moving away from Pathfinder (for a bit) and largely going to focus on the AGE system.

I will be focusing on my Firefly Campaign Setting as well as my current Pathfinder game.

I’ve done several articles on talking about Mouseguarding Pathfinder (here, here, here, here, and here).

Now it’s time to look at adding conditions to Dragon Age. Keeping with the AGE system these are simple and keep with the game mechanics.

Mouse Guard Conditions for Dragon Age:
Healthy- The characters base status.

Hungry/Thirsty– The character’s throat is parched and belly is empty. They need drink and sustenance. The character takes -2 to Constitution ability tests until they eat food and drink water.

Tired– The character is tired and cannot take a breather to regain Health or Mana Points until they rest for 6 hours.

Angry– The character is angry and agitated and takes -2 to Communication ability tests until they are able to calm themselves down.

Injured– The character has become injured in some manner. They take -2 to either Strength or Dexterity ability tests until they are able to get healing (either mundane or magical).

Rattled– The character feels less brave than normal and suffers -1 to attack, defense, and Willpower.
