The New Chapter Starts

It’s been a year since the Blight ended and the heroes have been traveling around the area helping people get back on their feet. This was all done through quick summary narrative. I wanted the players to be in a world that has gotten a foot through the door of rebuilding at not at the starting line.

To fast forward quickly my players spent a couple sessions (2 if I remember right) getting used to the changes in Olidimarah’s Haven. No longer was it just an underground city, made mostly of defenses and people cowering. There was an upper extension on the city now. It had grown to about 15,000 citizens. Over the past year, the word has spread, as people started traveling around again, that there was a Life Tree, and that it and some brave heroes destroyed the Blight. People from all over wanted to move close to the Life Tree since it was so powerful. The Tree also spawned two sects of nature groups who were using the Tree as a symbol for their own radical ideology.

The heroes spent the sessions gaining contacts with NPCs at shops and businesses, talking to De Pan and finding out the rumor mill in the city. While talking to De Pan he told them that crime families had moved into The Haven (what the city was now called with an Upper and a Lower) and he wanted the heroes, if they were so willing to apprehend him and bring him to justice. If it came to killing him, so be it, but alive if possible. *the whole point of this adventure was to let Mo’llock and Kaius (both rogues) really shine and do a stealth based session, something they hadn’t really been able to do up till this point. We threw Griffith (the Vampire Ranger) in the group with them for back up since he could hide, move silently, and turn into a bat and into gaseous form.* The rest of the group would be outside, providing a distraction and be close by in case of trouble.

This session was quite a bit of fun, the group handled themselves well and came up with some really clever ways of handling everything!

The session after that was celebrating the year anniversary of the end of the Blight, called Life Day! This was a great session as well! The group played contests, got into some trouble getting caught cheating at cards, and other things. The great thing was Albreck, the half dragon sorcerer wanted to do a magic contest, so I thought it would be fun to do a prestidigitation contest and make the other players the NPC contestants and to be fair, they would also be judges. Basically I said you get to do three effects. It would be Albreck vs Player one. Then player 2, 3, 4 would judge, and since I felt I should be impartial I rolled a d20 w a 50/50 chance for either player. The judges vote would give that player a +1 on their spell craft roll.. The NPC’s had a blanket # against Albreck, with the modifiers. Albreck had it the hardest since he had to come up with 4 unique designs. All were good, creative, and fun. I really liked this challenge because it got all of the players involved and doing something that they normally wouldn’t have gotten to do.

As the day wore into dusk an explosion ripped through Upper Haven where all the players were located. Each player rushed outside of their respective building or area to see smoke and another explosion at the center of the Upper Haven near the Arena. Citizens were fleeing from the area while smoke leather clad humanoids with masks and obsidian scimitars cut into them. The heroes left these for the guard who started engaging them and made for the center of the city to find a man in smoke and blood red robes in the center of a pile of debris and bodies smiling at them. He raised his staff and said, “To the heroes of the Blight.. I bring you thanks.. and death from the Five Blades…” Suddenly the ground around him raised as if something were burrowing beneath it and a Remorhaz burst from the ground as smoke clad humanoids appear from around buildings.

The players looked at me, open-mouthed and wide-eyed when, instead of saying roll me initiative, I whispered “to be continued.”

*Next- We’ve finally caught up to where we actually are in game!*
